Artist Spotlight - Undefeated
For our March 2023 Artist Spotlight, we are thrilled to highlight the three-piece sibling rock band out of Tug Hill, Undefeated. The band features Meredith Dunckel on guitar and vocals, Christian Dunckel on drums, and Lis Dunckel on bass.
The band started performing five years ago with original members Meredith and Christian. Growing up, Meredith had a passion for singing and always knew she wanted to be in a band. Her brother, Christian, began playing drums at the age of twelve and when she asked him if he wanted to start a band, his response was “Heck Yeah!” Younger sister, Lis, joined that band a year and half ago when Undefeated’s former bassist was unable to commit to the touring schedule. Siblings, Meredith and Christian, were skeptical at first as Lis had never picked up a bass before, but now she is an integral part of the band.
The band has toured around the country and has shows lined up this summer in Pennsylvania and Missouri. Their setlist consists of a majority of original music written by Meredith. When you watch them on stage, you can’t miss their high energy, full rock sound, and unique, fun style.
Undefeated has released a number of singles, which are available on all streaming platforms. The band worked with producer Chris Kelly, guitarist for Ice Nine Kills, to record their music. They also just released a self-produced music video for their song “Future” earlier in February. The band shared that they enjoy creating music videos, but it has been a lot of learning and growing in the process.
All members of the band are self-taught musicians, but Meredith just started taking vocal and guitar lessons to hone her craft. She shared that when she feels she has hit a ceiling she likes to take lessons to help push past it. She is currently taking voice lessons because she wants to be able to tell a story and bring more emotions to the surface. For Meredith, singing is her passion and she plays guitar out of necessity. She recently started taking guitar lessons and shared:“I love singing, I just do guitar because I do it, but now I am actually focused on getting better.”
Meredith encourages any artist that is looking to perform to “Just go for things. If you want to try a new move on stage, don’t get up the courage for six shows, do it for the first one and critique it for the next one... Grab that confidence and do it!” One thing that has helped the band grow and improve is that they always share one good thing and one bad thing after each show. Christian recommends that if you want to progress with your art that you have to always “practice your craft!”
