Artist Spotlight - Gary Walts

This month, HarmoNNY Performing Arts Community proudly shines our Artist Spotlight on Gary Walts, a remarkable classical guitarist and photographer whose talent and dedication have enriched Jefferson County for decades.

Gary’s journey with classical guitar began with a serendipitous encounter. In 1979, Gary, then 25, borrowed his brother Al’s acoustic guitar. Al Walts, a former WTNY Radio morning show host and accomplished rhythm guitarist, unknowingly set Gary on a new path. The guitar sat untouched for a year, forgotten in the backseat of Gary’s car. When he finally picked it up, it sparked a lifelong passion.

The turning point came when Gary saw a public TV concert by Andrés Segovia at the White House. Segovia, the world-renowned classical guitarist, introduced Gary to the mesmerizing sounds of classical guitar—a style he had never heard before. A chance encounter with a Segovia book at Robinson’s Bookstore in downtown Watertown solidified his fascination. Gary began lessons with local guitar player Ron Sacci, studying under him for five years and developing his mastery of the art form.

Gary’s performances are a rare treasure in the North Country, as few musicians in the area specialize in classical guitar. Whether playing at wedding receptions or private parties, Gary creates an atmosphere of elegance and ambiance, ensuring that guests can enjoy both the music and their conversations. His classical guitar, with its wider neck, slotted tuning pegs, and warm nylon strings, brings a distinctive and soothing sound to every event.

Beyond music, Gary has had an illustrious career as a professional photographer. His love for photography began in childhood, inspired by his father’s hobby and the glossy images in magazines. After studying photography at Indian River High School under Bill Geller, Gary pursued his dream of becoming a professional photographer.

Gary’s photographic career took off when he began freelancing for the Syracuse Post-Standard. They provided him with unlimited film, and his pictures gained significant recognition, including publications in LIFE Magazine—a lifelong aspiration. Over his 30-year career, Gary documented everything from local events to presidential visits, working for the Associated Press, USA Today, and Black Star Photo Agency in NYC.

Despite his demanding photography career, Gary always kept his guitar close, playing a little each day. When the photography industry shifted, Gary returned to his roots in music. At 55, he began relearning his guitar repertoire and teaching others to play, combining his dual passions for music and education.

Gary’s story is one of talent, perseverance, and a deep love for the arts. His ability to weave music and photography into a life of creative expression has made a lasting impact on the community.

Join us in celebrating Gary Walts as HarmoNNY’s November Artist Spotlight. His artistry and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all.
